Gol is number one in Brazil with a market share of 37.8 percent, followed by Latam with 32.5 percent and Azul with 29.1 percent. The number four Passaredo and five Map Linhas Aéreas achieve only 0.48 and 0.19 percent respectively. But now they are getting a little stronger.
Passaredo announced last week that it was buying its competitor Map. Together, the two airlines have a market share of around 0.7 percent. Passaredo President José Luiz Felicio Filho explained the newspaper Folha de São Paulo that they share a similar philosophy. Both are flying to Brazilian cities that are still undersupplied. They also have a single fleet.
Strong position
Map Linhas Aéreas (formerly: Manaus Aerotaxi Participaçoes) was founded in 2011 and currently has a fleet of five ATR 42 and 72. Passaredo, founded in 1995, has five ATR 72. Both got lucky in the auction for the distribution of slots at São Paulo-Congonhas Airport from the bankrupt Avianca Brasil Together they now own 26 slots at the city airport of the metropolis. This is a strong starting point for growth, according to Felicio Filho.
Inspired by the merger, Passaredo's management is already looking for larger aircraft. With Airbus Boeing or Embraer jets, the capacity from São Paulo-Congonhas can be increased, as Passaredo boss Eduardo Busch told the Panrotas portal. But a decision will not be made until next year.
