It was a lengthy long-distance relationship between St. Helena and Cape Town that lasted for years. Between the city on the coast of South Africa and the island far away in the South Atlantic, to which Napoleon had once been exiled, there was only one mail ship as the only way to travel for decades. In October 2017, however, St. Helena became connected to the rest of the world by a regular, scheduled flight - initially on the well-known route to Cape Town.
Because Airlink, the airline operating the flights, was not allowed to board more passengers during a refueling stop in Namibia, the regional airline soon canceled its flights between St. Helena and Cape Town. Since then, it has only been flying to the island via Namibia from Johannesburg and has been satisfied with the load factor so far. As the South African newspaper The Newspaper reports, Airlink will now resume flights from Cape Town. The flights will take place once a week during the peak season between the beginning of December and the end of March, while from Johannesburg there will be two weekly flights to the island.
