According to a report by CNN, a new problem has been discovered with the 737 Max. Boeing has already finished a software update to prevent the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System MCAS from accidentally pushing the plane's nose downwards. But according to the report simulator tests have shown that another error can lead to the same scenario.
The pilots have found out that a malfunction of a microprocessor can lead to the plane pushing its nose downwards. However, it is not clear whether this played a role in the two crashes of Boeing 737 Max planes of Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air. Either way, if this malfunction occurs, it would be difficult for pilots to gain back control «within seconds».
FAA confirms new problem
Boeing is already working on a solution. The plane manufacturer stated that it is working closely with the authorities to return the plane into service as soon as possible. According to the report It is still unclear whether a simple further software update will remove the problem or whether the microprocessor needs to be replaced.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a tweet that a new problem with the Boeing 737 Max has been identified. «The FAA recently found a potential risk that Boeing must mitigate», it says. It clarified that it is not following a prescribed timeline, but a «thorough process» for returning the 737 Max to passenger service.
