Fabian caused chaos and devastation in Spain, Portugal and France on Sunday (22 December). Corsica was hit particularly hard by the winter storm. It caused power cuts in many places on the French island. More than 50,000 households were without electricity. One elderly woman was killed.
The airport of Corsica's capital Ajaccio was also stricken. It was flooded by the rain that accompanied Storm Fabian. The runway and parts of the apron are flooded. As a result, there were no flights on Monday (23 December). It is not yet clear whether the Aéroport d'Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte will reopen on Tuesday.
Assessment of the damage impossible
A spokesman for the airport told local media that it could be days before normal operations could be resumed. An assessment of the damage is not possible, he said. Passengers are currently being flown out via Bastia.
