Asia is considered a boom region in aviation. In the coming years, China will overtake the USA as the world's largest market. The International Air Transport Association Iata estimates that demand on the continent will grow by 4.7 percent annually until 2035.
Despite this good outlook, the corona crisis is also claiming victims in Asia. On Friday (June, 26) the supervisory board of Nok Scoot decided to stop operations and liquidate the company. Due to intensive competition, the situation had already been difficult before, it explained in an announcement. But the Covid-19 pandemic had made things worse. The Thai low-cost airline says it cannot recover from this.
450 redundancies
Nok Scoot was founded in 2014 as a joint venture between the Thai Nok Air (51 per cent of the shares) and the Singapore Airlines subsidiary Scoot (49 per cent). With a fleet of seven Boeing 777-200 ER, the low-cost airline served destinations in China, India, Japan and Taiwan from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok. 450 employees will lose their jobs. Only a few of them can continue working for the time being in order to wind up the company.
