Tanzania's tourism is lagging behind other countries in Africa. At the end of 2016, it was evident to President John Magufuli that the reason for this was also the state airline: «When tourists come to Tanzania, they have to book numerous connecting flights,» Magufuli criticized. Since then, the government has been gradually expanding Air Tanzania and adding modern aircraft to its fleet.
To date, the airline has taken delivery of two Airbus A220-300 regional jets and received a Boeing 787-8 in July last year. For the first time in its history, it is offering long-haul flights with its Dreamliner. Now, the expansion at Air Tanzania is proceeding into the next round. Reuters news agency reports that the government is now planning to buy two more Airbus A220s and to add a De Havilland Dash 8 Q400 (previously Bombardier Q400) to its turboprop fleet.
