It was the completion of a major order. On June 27th, Delta Air Lines took over the last of 130 ordered Boeing 737-900s, with N930DZ being the last one. This leaves the American airline without a single open order for the American aircraft manufacturer.
This is particularly remarkable, since Delta - one of the largest Boeing operators - still awaits numerous jets from Airbus. A look into the order book of the European aircraft manufacturer at the end of June shows: The Americans will still get twenty-seven A220-100, fifty A220-300, forty-four A321, one hundred A321 Neo, thirty-three A330-900 and twelve A350-900 jets, a staggering 266 Airbus jets.
Delta would like to buy Boeing 797
The fact, of course, that Delta no longer has an open order with Boeing can change at any time. CEO Ed Bastian has stated several times that he is hoping that Boeing will build the New Middle of the Market Airplane NMA, which has already been unofficially dubbed 797 in the industry.
